Shot Into the Dark.
A fictional story rooted in the confrontation near Hayes Pond.
About the story
When the single light above the Klan rally near Hayes Pond is shot out, the darkness becomes part of the historical memory of that night. Shot Into the Dark returns to that moment through Caleb Locklear, the Lumbee ghostwriter voice of the story.
Where history meets fiction
A Ku Klux Klan rally was held near Hayes Pond on January 18, 1958. The rally light was shot out as local Lumbee people confronted the gathering.
Caleb Locklear’s voice and the story’s interior experience are part of the imagined telling. They do not replace the documentary record.
